Labor Walk--Thanks to Beth Sabo and Stacy Galazin for taking time to participate in the Labor Walk Campaign on October 28th. Members are invited to join the Labor Walk Campaign for Andy Levin on Saturday, November 4th at 1 p.m. Staging will be a the UFCW Hall in Madison Heights.
Reading Class--In answer to the question regarding the new reading course requirement I received the following reply. "Any provisionally certified teacher who doesn't renew or make application for the professional certificate before July 1, 2007 is required to complete a course of study that includes the elements within the PA 118 law. Previously taken reading courses as an undergraduate will not be accepted for this requirement. The teacher preparation institutions are moving to have approved course offerings soon. The course taken must extend and expand the knowledge that the teacher gained during the initial preparation program. Given the specificity and range across disciplines of the law regarding the components it is unlikely that any previous coursework covers all of the elements." Bonnie Rockafellow. Ph.D., Education Consultant
Conferences--Approval for conferences is now the responsibility of the building principals. The absence of a district curriculum director necessitated a change in managements approach. Each building has been provided with a budget for conferences. While NCA is a priority, there is no truth to the rumor that only NCA related programs would be approved. Procedures for professional personnel that fall under Special Ed are still being worked out. Special Education does have a separate budget for conferences.
Respectfully submitted,
Judy Schram
LFT President
