Fingerprinting-- School Safety Legislation (2005 PA 129-131) passed by the State Legislature requires that all employees of school districts hired prior to January 1, 2006 must have a criminal history record check by the Michigan State Police and the Federal Bureau of Investigation by July 1, 2008. The district has agreed to pay the costs of fingerprinting as long as you do this on site. You will soon receive a letter that will inform you of the procedure to follow in order to fulfill this requirement. If you have been fingerprinted before for prior employment it is still recommended that you have this done at Lamphere. The Human Resources Department will be verifying this fact prior to the scheduled dates, January 14-18th  for the procedure.

Increased Costs for Certification--Effective November 19, 2007 the cost of a Provisional and Professional Teaching Certificate for in-state applicants is $160. Renewal fees are also the same.

Professional Development Committee--If you are interested in serving on the district Professional Development Committee please contact me or your building rep. The goal of the committee is to help plan effective professional development for all LFT members.

Martin Luther King Day January 21st

In 1965, Martin Luther King received car keys and registrations for $40,000 worth of station wagons in Selma, Ala., from then-UFT president Albert Shanker (above) and the national AFT for a voter registration drive. (credit--AFT website)

"The labor movement was the principal force that transformed misery and despair into hope and progress. Out of its bold struggles, economic and social reform gave birth to unemployment insurance, old-age pensions, government relief for the destitute and, above all, new wage levels that meant not mere survival but a tolerable life. The captains of industry did not lead this transformation; they resisted it until they were overcome. When in the thirties the wave of union organization crested over the nation, it carried to secure shores not only itself but the whole society."
—Speech to the state convention of the Illinois AFL-CIO, Oct. 7, 1965

AFT Membership Card Program Kicks Off in the New Year

The AFT in mid-January will begin sending national membership cards to members in all states except the AFT-NEA merged states of Florida, Minnesota, Montana and New York, whose members currently have membership cards. Members receiving the national card will include full-dues, half-dues, quarter-dues, retired and on-leave AFT members.

The membership card program's Jan. 15 launch follows a successful pilot program earlier this year.

  • Each membership card has a unique ID number that will be members’ entry to AFT+ member benefits via the members-only Web site;
  • The members-only Web site is constructed to allow members to update their personal contact information for more accurate data lists and better communications;
  • A prize of $100 will be offered to each of 250 randomly selected members who log in with their membership number (this offer will last a limited time).
  • Members will activate their cards by logging in at www.aft.org/members. Members without Web access can call 888/AFT-JOIN.
  • All AFT members who hold the merged state membership cards will use their cards just as they would use national membership cards and will also share in a chance to win $100.

Questions about the AFT national membership cards may be addressed to AFT membership deputy director Yvonne Freeman at 888/238-5646 or via e-mail at membership@aft.org. [Priscilla Nemeth, Yvonne Freeman]
